Trial by fire

About 35 class V students were forced to hold their palms over burning candles to “prove” their innocence after a teacher found some money missing from her handbag. The “agni pariksha” (trial by fire) at the primary school — which left six children with minor burns and many more with mental scars — has sparked outrage in Kayalpattinam, Tuticorin, about 650 km from here.

The Telegraph

This trial by candle is not very different from test of fire, which happens in remote tribal areas of Baluchistan. People say educating those tribals is a solution to that problem. I wonder how though; if schools in cities like Kayalpattinam are having such problems, I’ve little hope for those tribal areas.

Update:

The teacher was actually 45 year old headmistress of the Panchayat School. Criminal proceedings have been initiated against her:

The headmistress, arrested under a bailable Section of the IPC, would be produced before a court in Tuticorin tomorrow, district superintendent of police Mahesh Kumar Agarwal told newspersons when contacted from here.
