Blogspot ban lifted in Pakistan

Posted by: BD on: March 10, 2007

If irony were made of strawberries, we would all would be having smoothies.
It was because of PCTL’s technical incompetence that led to the blocking of entire blogspot domain in Pakistan in an attempt to block a few irritant blogs hosted on the same.
And lo and behold! It’s the same incompetence that led to the (temporary?) [...]

What’s delaying the procurement of $9 billion Multi-role combat aircraft (MRCA) deal? The Hindu has some details.
On a related topic, old story but worth mentioning, India and Russia have finally decided to go ahead with the joint development of a 5th generation fighter jet (tip Mihir). This comes after India had expressed its reservations regarding [...]

The first all-female U.N. peacekeeping unit, made up of 103 women from India, arrived in Liberia on Tuesday to help the West African nation recover from 14 years of on-and-off civil war. Washington Post

These women belong to the elite Rapid Action Force (RAF) of India, that was created by the Government in 1991 specifically to [...]

Obamania

Posted by: BD on: January 31, 2007

Barack Obama’s stint with Islam during his childhood has apparently become a major political issue in the US. Allegations(video) and refutations(video) are floating around in the media. I can almost picture Obama yelling out ‘Hey! I’m Obama not Osama!’

US is a melting pot; it’s the least xenophobic of all nations, no doubt about that. But [...]

Birth giving devices

Posted by: BD on: January 28, 2007

Lisa at TokyoMango quotes Japan’s health minister:
The number of women aged between 15 and 50 is fixed. Because the number of birth-giving machines and devices is fixed, all we can ask for is for them to do their best per head, although it may not be so appropriate to call them machines.
Couple this with a [...]

Space Hegemony – III

Posted by: BD on: January 19, 2007

The rumors have been confirmed, eyebrows have been raised. The ramifications of the recent Chinese anti-satellite missile test are much more than simply an arms race.
I don’t blame the Chinese though. Satellites form the spine of a nation’s communication and information systems. Protecting such assets in space is equally, if not more, important as protecting [...]

Posted by: BD on: January 17, 2007

Yahoo Answers Team(India) is featuring a section called ‘Ask the Planet‘ (ATP). Over the coming weeks ATP team would be bringing in Indian luminaries and thinkers to ask thought provoking questions on its website. Check their blog for details.
The first question has been asked by none other than the President of India, Dr. APJ Abdul [...]

EC to help Nepal conduct elections

Posted by: BD on: December 23, 2006

Before Nepal, the Election commission of India was invited to assist elections in Iraq (also had a small stint in Afghanistan).
Bleh! The EC has conducted elections in Bihar! Iraq and Nepal are peanuts compared to that.

Brain-dead media

The ‘dork media’ category has been gathering dust. Time to pay a visit to this baby.
We often crib about our Desi Dork Media, affectionately called as DDM. However, the American media is not far behind. A good example of which is the recent interview of Bill Clinton by Chris Wallace of the Fox network, [...]

Top 5 reasons to buy Musharraf’s memoirs

Posted by: BD on: September 27, 2006

So, I was thinking about buying Musharraf’s memoirs. But, as I went through the excerpts that have been showing up in different sections of the media for a week now(one of those is in my previous post), I realized it’s not going to be an easy decision.
To make things easier, I decided to list out [...]

Mohabbat Zindabad

Posted by: BD on: September 22, 2006

The media was full of speculations about outcome of the proposed dialogue between India and Pakistan in the recently finished NAM summit. Four days before the summit there was a column by Najam Sethi on Daily Times that suggested the following:

However, precisely for these reasons, it is important for Pakistan and India to continue to [...]

The US president, George Bush, today dismissed the Geneva conventions on the laws of war as “vague” and called on Congress to back controversial new rules on the handling of terror suspects. – The Guardian

Sure, whatever works for them is righteous, and whatever doesn’t can be just chucked out like that. Deja Vu.

Mystery of Zahedan – II

Posted by: BD on: September 16, 2006

Continued from here.
Iran has a significant number of baloch people residing in the Sista-Balochistan province. The Baloch nationalist movement should hurt Iran as it hurts Pakistan. In this light, Iran’s complicity in Baloch insurgency is quite perplexing.
Balochistan is by no means a “Kashmir” for Pakistan. It’s much more than that, simply because there are so [...]
