Deja vu

Posted by: BD on: August 20, 2007

It seems wordpress.com was blocked in Turkey. Almost seems like a page out of history.
Thanks to RTI we came to know how the Government blocks websites in India.
Update:
Official reaction from wordpress.com regarding the ban in Turkey.
The letter mentioned in the above link contains the list of blogs that led to a Turkish court order to [...]

Minorities and minority opinion

Posted by: BD on: August 17, 2007

A lot of people confuse democracy with majority rule, the latter being only one of the pillars of the former. The other pillar is minority rights. In a very simplistic way I say that democracy is actually a dynamic equilibrium between these two pillars ( I use the word equilibrium because bad things happen [...]

Whither Democracy?

Posted by: BD on: August 11, 2007

Aqil, at pakistaniat.com, has an extensive post on the need for democratization of political parties in Pakistan.
Unfortunately, the political parties are not interested in such reforms. Even the much hyped charter of democracy, (which did contain some constructive proposals on the independence of the judiciary, the election commission and the national accountability bureau) was lacking in [...]

Bizarre internship

Posted by: BD on: April 11, 2007

This guy from IIM-A is interning at the research cell of the Communist Party of India – Marxist (CPI-M)!
It’s not unusual to see IIM students interning at posh offices on Wall Street, but someone voluntarily opting for interning at the offices of a political party is bizarre.

Chepuri admits that he chose the off-beat internship offer [...]

Google please don’t be evil

Posted by: BD on: March 20, 2007

The past few weeks have had pretty spicy developments.
The nature and speed of the Pakistani blogosphere’s reaction to the recent ouster of the Chief Justice of Pakistan has been pretty impressive. The amount of insightful discussions generated per post is phenomenal.
Back home, Google has entered into a naughty agreement with the Mumbai police regarding disclosure [...]

Obamania

Posted by: BD on: January 31, 2007

Barack Obama’s stint with Islam during his childhood has apparently become a major political issue in the US. Allegations(video) and refutations(video) are floating around in the media. I can almost picture Obama yelling out ‘Hey! I’m Obama not Osama!’

US is a melting pot; it’s the least xenophobic of all nations, no doubt about that. But [...]

APJ in Ask the Planet

Posted by: BD on: January 17, 2007

Yahoo Answers Team(India) is featuring a section called ‘Ask the Planet‘ (ATP). Over the coming weeks ATP team would be bringing in Indian luminaries and thinkers to ask thought provoking questions on its website. Check their blog for details.
The first question has been asked by none other than the President of India, Dr. APJ Abdul [...]

A moderate Muslim’s dilemma

Posted by: BD on: January 4, 2007

Discovered two interesting posts at the indianmuslims.in blog. Both deal with an important but often ignored issue: the insecurities and dilemmas faced by Indian Muslims.
The first post is by Sharique, who starts with a straight forward question “How easy is it to be a Muslim among the non-Muslims?”; a question that can be best [...]

EC to help Nepal conduct elections

Posted by: BD on: December 23, 2006

Before Nepal, the Election commission of India was invited to assist elections in Iraq (also had a small stint in Afghanistan).
Bleh! The EC has conducted elections in Bihar! Iraq and Nepal are peanuts compared to that.

Netaji’s death – Mystery or a Cover-up?

Posted by: BD on: December 22, 2006

You tend to ask this question, particularly when the Government acts like this:

The Prime Minister’s Office has refused to furnish data on documents and records it held on the mysterious disappearance of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, saying the disclosure would harm India’s relations with foreign countries. HT

Now what kind of bullshit reason is that? We’ve [...]

Brain-dead media

Posted by: BD on: September 27, 2006

The ‘dork media’ category has been gathering dust. Time to pay a visit to this baby.
We often crib about our Desi Dork Media, affectionately called as DDM. However, the American media is not far behind. A good example of which is the recent interview of Bill Clinton by Chris Wallace of the Fox network, [...]

Top 5 reasons to buy Musharraf’s memoirs

Posted by: BD on: September 27, 2006

So, I was thinking about buying Musharraf’s memoirs. But, as I went through the excerpts that have been showing up in different sections of the media for a week now(one of those is in my previous post), I realized it’s not going to be an easy decision.
To make things easier, I decided to list out [...]

Police reforms

Posted by: BD on: September 23, 2006

The Supreme Court has ordered sweeping police reforms acting on a public interest litigation(PIL) filed by retd. Director General of Police(DGP) Prashant Singh. Broadly speaking, the reforms aim to achieve the following:

Insulate police from politicians.
Separate law&order machinery from investigative apparatus.
Fix the tenure of police officers.

Moreover as this order comes from the highest seat of judiciary, [...]

Mohabbat Zindabad

Posted by: BD on: September 22, 2006

The media was full of speculations about outcome of the proposed dialogue between India and Pakistan in the recently finished NAM summit. Four days before the summit there was a column by Najam Sethi on Daily Times that suggested the following:

However, precisely for these reasons, it is important for Pakistan and India to continue to [...]
