Posted by: BD on: August 27, 2007

Just got this via email (thanks Ayesha). It seems the website of leading Pakistani daily Dailytimes got hacked yesterday. The exact time and the duration of operation is unclear, but the site is back up and running today.
The hackers posted the following message:
“hack3d by ic3d r0s3 :) greetz to (linuxg0d) ,(savechanges) ,(pagefault) and old whackerz crew;;;;;; [...]

Happy Independence Day

Posted by: BD on: August 14, 2007

… to all my friends in Dushman Des

All Things Pakistan has a series of insightful posts on events around Pakistan’s independence. Do check them out!
Tomorrow, on the occasion of India’s independence day, NDTV has a bouquet of interesting programmes. The ones to watch out for are Azaad Humsafar and Freedom at Midnight.
The thing to [...]

Whither Democracy?

Posted by: BD on: August 11, 2007

Aqil, at pakistaniat.com, has an extensive post on the need for democratization of political parties in Pakistan.
Unfortunately, the political parties are not interested in such reforms. Even the much hyped charter of democracy, (which did contain some constructive proposals on the independence of the judiciary, the election commission and the national accountability bureau) was lacking in [...]

For The Daily times

Posted by: BD on: July 30, 2007

Recently The Daily Times, a Pakistani English Daily, had an article citing the Indian National Security Advisor’s(NSA) view on the progress of Indo-Pak peace process. That article contained a picture of former Indian president Mr. K. R. Narayanan. I kept struggling for a while trying to figure out how the former President was involved in [...]

Pakistani press spills the beans

Posted by: BD on: March 28, 2007

A widely circulated email supposedly originating from the CEO of Pakistan’s leading daily Dawn, Hameed Haroon, talks about how the Pakistani administration infringes on the freedom of press. More details here and here.
Not that this was not known before. It was kind of like an open secret worthy of being given a royal ignore by [...]

Google please don’t be evil

Posted by: BD on: March 20, 2007

The past few weeks have had pretty spicy developments.
The nature and speed of the Pakistani blogosphere’s reaction to the recent ouster of the Chief Justice of Pakistan has been pretty impressive. The amount of insightful discussions generated per post is phenomenal.
Back home, Google has entered into a naughty agreement with the Mumbai police regarding disclosure [...]

Blogspot ban lifted in Pakistan

Posted by: BD on: March 10, 2007

If irony were made of strawberries, we would all would be having smoothies.
It was because of PCTL’s technical incompetence that led to the blocking of entire blogspot domain in Pakistan in an attempt to block a few irritant blogs hosted on the same.
And lo and behold! It’s the same incompetence that led to the (temporary?) [...]

“Samjhauta” with security

Posted by: BD on: February 21, 2007

While the newspapers are busy speculating about the culprits behind the Samjhauta express blasts, and sometimes giving due coverage to politico soundbytes, news of value happens to be a rare commodity.
But sometimes one does get lucky. I happened to come across this on Rediff:
“Tightening security measures at the Old Delhi Railway Station, Railways has decided [...]

Don’t Block the Blog

Posted by: BD on: February 17, 2007

Teeth Maestro reports of a breakthrough in the Pakistan blogspot ban situation. The support of the Pakistani mainstream media has been close to nothing. I hope, for once, respectable dailies like DailyTimes, stop giving us sex advice and start focusing on the blogspot ban.

Sting ops find home in Pakistan

Posted by: BD on: February 9, 2007

Sting operations, that helped take the news media revolution in India to new heights, have now started happening in Pakistan(tip Ayesha). Karachi Metblogs has a few posts(1,2,3) about a show, Gumnaam, produced by GeoTV, that has started using the sting op way to expose the uglier side of the society. The description of the show, [...]
