Coffee at Midnight

Posted by: BD on: November 14, 2009

Reposting an old post from a defunct blog of mine.
“Eyes don’t obey but your mind says no way.
You remain confused while the work stays at bay
You need that magic potion,
something like the Gaul’s ration.
The doctors say this ain’t the time
Darn! it’s difficult to resist the temptation.
Out of milk and out of sugar,
it won’t be that [...]

We knew it right from 1992. Now the world knows.
Congrats Rahman!
I liked his acceptance speech:
All my life I had the choice between hate and love. I choose love and here I am.

Is there anybody out there?

Posted by: BD on: August 6, 2008

I’m not sure if you share this feeling. Every morning, as I browse through the newspaper, it feels as if I already know what’s gonna be in it. I switch to TV, looking for some excitement. The same feeling again. Things have become so predictable!
I ultimately end up relying on my morning tea to wake [...]

Homecoming!

Posted by: BD on: August 6, 2007

It’s been about one and half weeks in India already. Terming the experience so far as overwhelming would be an understatement. It’s been just 4 years, but the changes I see, both good and bad, are drastic. Hard to believe really!

Farewell Mr. President

Posted by: BD on: July 21, 2007

As the end of the presidential poll for APJ’s successor draws near, one wonders, “would we ever have a president like him?”
Even though 72% of Indians wanted him back, but it’s the politicians who elect the president stupid!
Any ways, just as a tribute to his presidency I’d like you guys to read one of [...]

Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan

Posted by: BD on: January 19, 2007

Wanted to share a cute little video that was used as a promotion for Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (hindi for “education for all”).

The video captures the journey from home to school as made by kids in different parts of India. The song, written by ex prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, makes this [...]

Discovered this amazing site via Boing Boing. normalroom.com lets users upload pictures of their rooms, as simple as that. What you end up with is a huge stock of interior-deco ideas of “normal rooms”
What’s more interesting is that the pictures have been categorized by nationality as well. So you can browse rooms by [...]

Police reforms revisited

Posted by: BD on: January 3, 2007

There seems to be some movement in police reforms in India. In my earlier post I didn’t emphasize that the Supreme Court had actually set a deadline for implementing the reforms (Id had rightly asked about the same). I stumbled upon this news report:
The Supreme Court, in a landmark judgment, has ruled that the [...]

New Delhi, December 12: The Supreme Court on Tuesday dismissed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL), which sought a ban on the publication of obscene and nude photographs in newspapers of the country.
A bench headed by Justice A R Laxman, however, directed the Union Government to consider suggestions made by Press Council of India for bringing [...]

Police reforms

Posted by: BD on: September 23, 2006

The Supreme Court has ordered sweeping police reforms acting on a public interest litigation(PIL) filed by retd. Director General of Police(DGP) Prashant Singh. Broadly speaking, the reforms aim to achieve the following:

Insulate police from politicians.
Separate law&order machinery from investigative apparatus.
Fix the tenure of police officers.

Moreover as this order comes from the highest seat of judiciary, [...]

Appreciate what you can do

Rakant reflects on the other face of Mumbai — slums, poverty and misery.(via Ankan).
My thoughts:
A wealthy man shouldn’t feel guilty about his wealth. For wealth doesn’t simply mean the amount of money he has. It means the amount of change he can bring about in his vicinity — knowledge or money, both imply wealth. He [...]
