Bug #1

delllinux.gifThe Dell Linux Survey is soon going to bear fruit. Direct2Dell blog has posted an optimistic update regarding the same.

What I find really nice is the speed at which Dell has responded regarding availability of Linux as the operating system in the home PC and laptop market. Even though I hate Dell to the core for their laptop designs, I got to give them credit for this new initiative.

Would Ubuntu’s bug #1 get fixed finally?

Dell happens to be the number 1 PC maker in the US. It won’t be wrong to assume that other PC manufacturers would mimic Dell’s strategy. And with Vista adoption moving at a limping pace, things look good.

Carthik, at Ubuntu Blog, mentions in his latest post:

More people use Windows not because they want to, but because they have to.
More people use Linux not because they have to, but because they want to.

This is going to change soon, I hope.

    Linux cannot capture general users because of the complexity involved. The easiest linux, SuSe, is by still way behind developing a good user interface. And plus companies like google and yahoo need to support linux (seen the yahoo messenger for linux? it hasn’t been updated for years).

    Ubuntu has a number of easy interfaces, feisty will go one better. Messengers like gaim?

    The general public with want a functional interface with little complication - Gnome
    Technical Users may prefer a more configurable environment - kubuntu
    Education needs a solid and stable environment that is cost effective and thorough - Edubuntu
    There will be those who cannot afford a pc every 5 years, or they like minimal apps and blistering speed - Xubuntu

    Bah! U meant The general public with want a functional interface with little complication - with UBUNTU sorry.

    @Sharique

    I don’t think the problem lies in the user interface. For instance I find the GNOME interface more intuitive that any other interfaces I’ve used so far.

    The problem lies in the lack of hardware support, which is rapidly turning into a non-issue. Moreover, if Dell pitches in, this would no longer be a problem I think.

    Let’s hope for the best.
