Blogger blocked in Pakistan

Posted by: BD on: March 2, 2006

The other day a Pakistani friend of mine was complaining about her inability to access blogger.com website. But given the perennial problems she’s had with her so called Worldcall "broadband?" connection, we assumed it was just another outage.

However there are some audible noises in the blogosphere that point to a conspiracy theory: "Blogger.com has been blocked by the Government of Pakistan."  If this is indeed true, it’s good news and bad news. Bad news, because it’s a serious infringement of freedom to access information. Good news, because it shows increased IT awareness of the  Government of Pakistan. C’mon the GoP is aware that Blogger.com exists, that itself is a feat — kudos!

Oh! another good news is that there would be more users of wordpress.com now.

Update:

Although there’s no sign of this news in Pakistani mainstream media, the BBC is carrying a related article

I was growing suspicous now – attempted to access a couple of blogspot blogs from the university campus today, but to no success. and now I learn…

Idiotic morons, our policy makers. X-(

Couldn’t visit your blogs for quite some time.
Informative posts have been made here. Btw, I wonder why you are so interested about Pakistan!

And, yeah, Sanju has been searching for you for a long time.

We are usually interested in topics that we don’t know much about aren’t we?

one asks why state the obvious?
would pakistan ban bloggers? DUH!!!!

it probably means there is an upcoming class in Pakistant that is using the blogs to get new perspectives.

this is the best silver lining in my opinion.

I found http://blogspot.com.pk to be hosted. I found it valuable to host my ablog which is accessible in Pakistan. Try that one out. Its a wordpress hosted blog server. cheers :)

[...] War for news claims that CNN-IBN has banned the blogspot domain in its office spaces (apparently because of blogs like warfornews). If a “journalist driven” channel could resort to such sort of censorship, why complain about Pakistan?
